Pair a quick caffeine hit with the sustaining power of protein by having a low-fat latte instead of just a cup of coffee.
All that milk turns your java into a protein drink, which provides not only extra energy, but extra calcium, which is good for your bones.
Combine it with an ounce of almonds, he says, and the healthy fat will really tide you over -- while making you feel you're spoiling yourself silly!
To Good Health!
Enjoy!

Keeping Your Mind & Body Healthy as You Age
It's no secret that diet, stress, exercise and the environment around you can have a dramatic effect on your physical health as you age. Just as important, though - these same factors can affect the health of your mind, too.
Follow these simple steps as a great recipe for living longer and to reduce your chances of suffering from diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's:
Practice good nutrition from the beginning of life. Prioritize healthy and nutritious food for children, teenagers, and adults. Consumption of fast food and calorie-dense snacks is associated with weight gain and obesity and should be reduced or eliminated.
Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially deep-green and orange vegetables. Fruits and vegetables provide essential antioxidants, vitamins, and other critical micronutrients.
Avoid saturated and trans fats. Use vegetable oils that have a healthy balance of omega-3s, omega-6s, and monounsaturated fat. Eat a predominantly plant-based diet, and consume non-fat or low-fat varieties of dairy, lean meat, and chicken. Avoid frequent or routine use of oils high in omega-6s - especially corn, safflower, sunflower, and peanut oils.
Eat foods high in omega-3s. Eat fish at least once a week. If you don't eat fish, consider taking fish oil or algae-derived long-chain omega-3s. If using fish oil, chose a brand that has been distilled to remove toxins. Minimize consumption of fish that are high in contaminants such as mercury and PCBs, including swordfish, king mackerel, albacore and fresh tuna. Fish that are low in pollutants include cod, haddock, pollock, and wild Alaskan salmon.
Avoid routine consumption of sugar. Table sugar, high fructose corn syrup, maple syrup and honey, and beverages and foods containing them, cause rapid elevations of blood sugar, which has been linked to obesity, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and related illnesses.
Consume low-glycemic carbohydrates, such as whole grains and legumes. Examples include brown rice, pearled barley, steel-cut oats, rye, buckwheat, fruits, non-starchy vegetables, chick peas, lentils, pasta, winter squashes, and tubers (yams, sweet potatoes). Low glycemic foods help prevent unhealthy increases in your blood sugar.
Get food from local and organic sources whenever possible. Co-Ops, CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture), community gardens and family farms offer fresher foods which often have higher levels of protective antioxidants and micronutrients. Eating organic foods will also reduce your exposure to pesticides. Consuming more local foods also reduces fossil fuel consumption and air pollution associated with long distance transport.
Modest consumption of alcohol is OK. Evidence supports modest consumption of one-half to two drinks a day for adults as routine prevention, though alcohol intake should be avoided in risk situations including pregnancy and driving motor vehicles. Also, beverages like red wine and green tea contain important antioxidants, including flavonoid polyphenols, and caffeine may reduce the risk of Parkinson's disease.
Avoid food additives, such as aluminum. Recent evidence suggests that dietary aluminum may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Avoid routine consumption of foods with aluminum-containing baking powder or SALP (sodium aluminum phosphate), an additive used in some grain-based products and some processed cheeses. Highest aluminum levels in food have been reported in some pancake and waffle products - including mixes, frozen and restaurant varieties.
Reduce exposure to chemicals. Toxic chemicals can be encountered in the home, workplace, and community. We know that exposure to some commonly found chemicals (including pesticides) can increase the risk of Alzheimer's or other conditions, like diabetes, that also increase the risk of dementia. Avoid hazardous exposures to lead and solvents, like those used during building and remodeling projects. Use "green" building materials, or those that are less toxic from manufacture to disposal.
Increase physical activity. Increasing physical activity at any age improves physical and emotional wellbeing. Walking more each day can improve health, prevent weight gain and obesity, and help maintain independence. Daily aerobic exercise, as moderate as brisk walking for at least half an hour, is very beneficial.
Increase social activity. Regular social engagement with others reduces the risk of cognitive decline in later years. Volunteer, get involved in community activities, and stay in touch with family members.
Reduce stress. Take time out to relax. Many of us are constantly expected to multitask and respond instantly to ever more rapid communications. Try to find even a few minutes a day to relax.
Exercise your brain. Exercising your brain may be beneficial for maintaining healthy cognition. Common sense ways to do this include crossword puzzles and word games, chess, and activities that require critical thinking.

Six Superfoods You Should Have In Your Kitchen
Whether you use them for seasoning, sweetening or snacking, the foods you choose can function as health-boosting agents. And some vital nutrients come in surprising packages! These six superfoods are packed with benefits—and flavor.
CINNAMON
Here’s one superfood that’s easy on the waistline and popular with kids. The bark of the cinnamon tree, native to Sri Lanka, turns out to have extraordinary health benefits. Various research conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests that cinnamon regulates blood sugar, inhibits cancer cells and is anti-inflammatory.
COOKING TIP
Sprinkle it on French toast, oatmeal, hot buttered bread or a cup of hot chocolate. Cinnamon is great on sautéed bananas.
COCONUT MILK
The coconut is an unusual fruit: It’s rich, and the fat is mostly saturated. In the South Pacific, traditional diets use copious amounts of coconut oil, yet studies there have shown that people don’t get heart disease. In the U.S., research to support the heart-healthy claim is still being conducted. But we do know that coconut flakes, coconut milk and cream, and coconut oil contain lots of an antiviral, antibacterial fatty acid called lauric acid—one of the immune-boosters babies get from breast milk.
COOKING TIP
Mix a can of coconut milk with a pint of chicken stock and some grated ginger for a coconut chicken soup.
GRASS-FED BEEF
All beef is a great source of iron, B vitamins and zinc—three nutrients many Americans don’t get enough of. About 50 years ago, we started to fatten cattle on grain instead of grass. But grass-fed beef has many virtues. According to Loren Cordain, a professor in the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University, grass-fed beef resembles the wild game our ancestors ate. It contains less fat, less saturated fat, more CLA (an anti-cancer fat) and more omega-3 fatty acids than grain-fed beef.
COOKING TIP
Grass-fed beef is very lean. Use it ground for spaghetti sauce, chili and meatloaf.
NUTS
Almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts andhazelnuts are all rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and antioxidants. Walnuts are one of the best vegetarian sources of the omega-3 fatty acids that fight obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Meanwhile, Brazil nuts are incredibly rich in the antioxidant selenium—essential for sperm health, says fertility expert Dr. Marc Goldstein of Cornell University.
COOKING TIP
Put nuts in a blender with a little olive oil, milk or water for fresh nut butter.
RAW HONEY & MOLASSES
If you have a sweet tooth, try these whole, natural sweeteners instead of sugar. Unfiltered, raw honey contains many phytonutrients and enzymes to aid digestion. Molasses is the nutritious byproduct from boiling sugarcane down to white sugar. Blackstrap molasses is from the third boiling, which concentrates nutrients and, unsulfured, is a surprisingly good source of iron and many other minerals.
COOKING TIP
Unlike honey, which is best unheated, molasses already has been boiled, so there’s no reason not to cook with it. Think spicy baked goods like muffins and pumpkin pie.
OLIVE OIL
Olive oil contains monounsaturated fats (which reduce inflammation), phenols (cancer-fighting antioxidants) and vitamin E (which lowers the risk of heart disease, protects skin from damaging agents, and prevents nerve damage). Cold-pressed, extra-virgin oil contains more phenols, and its vitamin E is undamaged.
COOKING TIP
Gently sauté vegetables in it, drizzle it on salads or use it in pesto.

Kicking the Soda Drink Habit - Four Reasons Why.
Your Weight
Do you want to lose a few pounds and be healthier? Most of us do. Scientists at Harvard have narrowed in on one of the key reasons for rising obesity in western countries: soda pop. The new study finds that one-third of all carbohydrate calories in the American diet come from added sweeteners, with half of these calories coming from sweetened beverages. They point the finger of blame at the main sweetener used in soft drinks: high fructose corn syrup. It contains more calories than regular refined sugar and some studies suggest it reduces the body’s ability to process calories.
Of course, obesity is a complex issue – one must take into account diet, genetics, eating patterns, and physical activity – but it is not rocket science to figure out that if you were forced to consume an extra can of Coke per day (155 calories), with all other factors held constant, you could pack on at least 10 pounds by the end of the year. Studies have also found a connection between drinking large amounts of soda pop and consuming more calories through food. Either those taking sugared drinks lack the same restraint with food, or sugared drinks cause a rise in insulin that makes individuals hungrier, causing them to eat more.
But there is some good news: if you’re a regular soda pop drinker, and you want to lose some weight and improve your health, banishing soda pop from your diet is an easy way to start down this path. If you cut out two cans of pop per day from your diet (and maintain the same level of physical activity and eat the same number of calories), you can lose 1 pound in 12 days. Not bad at all.
Diabetes (Type 2)
Type 2 diabetes is rapidly increasing in developed countries as society becomes increasingly overweight and less active. Public health researchers label it an epidemic and believe much of the blame can be leveled at our enormous consumption of sugar. For example, an eight-year study of 50,000 nurses showed a correlation that suggests drinking one or more sugar-sweetened beverages (such as soft drinks and fruit punches) per day increases one’s risk of developing diabetes by 80% compared to those who drink less than one such drink per month. Interestingly, this finding was independent of other lifestyle factors.
What exactly is type 2 diabetes, you ask. If you have type 2 diabetes, either your body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Your body needs insulin to be able to use glucose for energy. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When the glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into the cells, two bad things happen: your cells are immediately starved for energy and, over time, high blood glucose levels damage your body. Having type 2 diabetes increases your risk for many serious complications, including heart disease, blindness, nerve damage, and kidney damage. Thankfully, watching your diet and getting regular exercise can help you manage this disease.
Your Teeth
As you already know, soda pop contains a high concentration of simple sugars. When you drink pop, the bacteria in your mouth ferment the sugars and produce acid. The problem being that acid dissolves tooth enamel; hence, soda pop is likely to increase your risk of cavities – holes or structural damage in your teeth. Moreover, a large number of soda pop drinks are acidic, with some even having a pH of 3.0 or lower. Sipping on acidic drinks over a long period of time will also erode your tooth enamel. Avoid soda pop and you can reduce your chances of a painful trip to the dentist and a mouthful of fillings.
The Environment
Planet earth needs all the help she can get these days. Perhaps you’re recycling your cans and bottles. That’s great, but you can do more. Millions upon millions of cans and bottles end up in landfills each year. If you’re still buying bottles and cans, you’re contributing to this cycle. Moreover, recycling still taxes the environment. Think about the fuel used to haul the bottles and cans around and the chemicals used during the recycling process itself.
You can do something about this: buy an eco-friendly reusable water container (and use it!). Check out these websites for options: KleanKanteen, MySigg, and EcoWaterBottle.
The other important part – and this will reap benefits for you directly – is to fill your bottle up with low sugar, low calorie beverages. Try good old-fashioned water. If water doesn’t excite you, try herbal tea (hot or iced) or water with lemon. You’ll lose weight; you’ll feel better; and you’ll be helping the environment!

Butter vs. Margarine: Which is Better for your Heart?
Margarine usually tops butter for heart health. But not all margarines are created equal.
Margarine is made from vegetable oils, so it contains no cholesterol. Margarine is also higher in "good" fats—polyunsaturated and monounsaturated—than butter is. These types of fat help reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad," cholesterol, when substituted for saturated fat. Butter, on the other hand, is made from animal fat, so it contains cholesterol and high levels of saturated fat.
But not all margarines are created equal—and some may even be worse than butter. Most margarines are processed using a method called hydrogenation, which results in unhealthy trans fats. In general, the more solid the margarine, the more trans fats it contains—so stick margarines usually have more trans fats than do tub margarines. Like saturated fats, trans fats increase blood cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. In addition, trans fats can lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol levels.
When selecting a margarine, choose one with the lowest trans fat content possible and less than 2 grams total of saturated plus trans fats. Manufacturers are required to list saturated and trans fats separately on food labels. Also, margarines fortified with plant sterols can help reduce LDL cholesterol levels by more than 10 percent. The amount of daily plant sterols needed for results is at least 2 grams. The American Heart Association recommends foods fortified with plant sterols for people with levels of LDL cholesterol over 160 milligrams per deciliter (4.1 mmol/L).
However, if you don't like the taste of margarine and don't want to give up butter completely, consider using whipped butter or light or reduced-calorie butter. There are also spreadable butters with vegetable oils added. Per serving, these products have less fat and calories than regular butter. The important thing is to use these products in small amounts—just enough to add flavor to the foods you're eating.

How to Get the Most Benefits from Your Tea
The secret to getting the greatest medicinal properties from your tea is in the tea quality and the preparation.
To find a high quality tea, look at the preparation instructions and the ingredients. The best varieties of teas have 40% raw tea leaf. High quality teas will also call for boiling water in the preparation instructions. Low quality teas will instruct the drinker to not use boiling water. This is because low quality teas become bitter when steeped in boiling water.
The tea should be left to steep for two to three minutes in water that is 190°F-150°F (boiling water) to achieve the best strength of medicinal properties. After the steeping process is over, though, the green tea can be served hot or cold.

There's sweet news about hot cocoa: Researchers at Cornell University have shown that the popular winter beverage contains more antioxidants per cup than a similar serving of red wine or tea and may be a healthier choice.
The study adds to growing evidence of the health benefits of cocoa and points to a tasty alternative in the quest to maintain a diet rich in healthy antioxidants, chemicals that have been shown to fight cancer, heart disease and aging, the researchers say.
To gain a better understanding of how these beverages compare in terms of antioxidants, the researchers tested them using similar serving sizes and conditions. The beverages tested included a cup of hot water containing two tablespoons of pure cocoa powder, roughly equivalent to the amount of cocoa in a normal-size packet of instant hot chocolate; a cup of water containing a standard size bag of green tea; a cup of black tea; and one glass of red wine (California Merlot).
Although you can enjoy cocoa either hot or cold, the hot version tends to trigger the release of more antioxidants than its cold counterpart, the researcher says.

New Studies Suggest Java Helps Protect Against Major Diseases
Considering all the past concern about possible health risks from drinking coffee, newer reports of coffee's possible protective effects may leave many people confused.
Overall, recent studies suggest that coffee (regular and decaffeinated) may offer a variety of health benefits against diseases such as cancer and diabetes. However, coffee may not deserve a place in the same category with other healthful foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains.
Laboratory studies suggest that the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant compounds in coffee could help reduce risk of cancer. Coffee also has a tendency to speed the passage of waste through the digestive tract. Potentially, this may lessen the time that cancer-causing compounds spend in contact with the intestinal tract, which could reduce the risk of colon cancer. Population studies, however, tend to split between coffee intake having no
effect on or reducing risk of breast and colon cancer.
Diabetes Prevention
The case for coffee's ability to protect against diabetes is strengthened by several recent studies. In the Iowa Women's Health Study, more than 28,000 women were followed for 11 years. The women who drank four or more cups of coffee daily were about 20 percent less likely to develop diabetes. That became a 30 to 40 percent drop among those who drank decaf coffee.
A study in Finland linked consumption of three to six cups of coffee per day with a 25 percent lower risk of diabetes. In both studies, benefits were seen after adjusting for other diabetes risks, such as weight, diet, and activity level. Several studies now link moderate coffee consumption with lower risk of Type 2 diabetes. Researchers are working to understand the potential advantage of decaf versus regular coffee and how
weight control is involved.
Potential increased risk of high blood pressure and heart disease has been one of the long-standing concerns about coffee. Recent studies confirm that caffeine can raise blood pressure, but this effect is observed with soft drinks, not coffee. Laboratory studies suggest that perhaps coffee's healthful compounds can counterbalance the blood-pressure raising effects of caffeine.
In the Iowa Women's Health Study noted above, four to five cups of coffee a day were linked with a 19 percent lower risk of heart-related death. Other studies have found no effect of coffee consumption on heart disease risk. But people should follow their doctor's advice.
Before you drink a whole pot ...
Coffee does warrant some cautions, however. Both regular and decaf coffee relax the muscle that keeps stomach acids from rising into the throat, so those with heartburn or reflux disease (GERD) are encouraged to avoid or strictly limit coffee. People with trouble sleeping should limit or avoid caffeinated coffee.
Studies now suggest it is unnecessary for pregnant women to completely avoid caffeinated coffee. Until the impact of caffeine is more clearly understood, however, many experts suggest that pregnant women limit their daily caffeine from coffee, soft drinks and other sources to about 300 mg, the equivalent of three cups of regular
coffee.
It's exciting that something as simple as drinking coffee might help lower our risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. However, while brewed coffee (not freeze dried) is a concentrated source of antioxidants, it can't be a substitute for berries, legumes, nuts, and other fruits and vegetables that provide antioxidants along with a wide range of vitamins, protective compounds and dietary fiber.

The Latest Review On Our .99¢ Daily Specials
I wanted to take this taste test with Pete Taylor 3 because he told me so much about a brand of coffee I have never heard about. "Ganoderma" which is really made with mushrooms. I affectionately teased him about hallucinating to the effect of drinking a mushroom product. I had no idea what might happen if I tried this somewhat strange sounding brew. In fact, it was very surprising to taste the smooth and very mild flavor.
THE TASTE TEST
Monday: Ganoderma Mocha
I drank it straight with no additional cream or sugar. My first impression was how smooth the flavor was, it was mild and not heavy. It was really surprising, I expected a bitter after taste, but it was none of the that. Great start, I was in high anticipation for the rest of my journey with the Ganoderma Brews.
Tuesday: Ganoderma- 4 in 1 Coffee
This was my favorite BREW! It was rich, smooth, and creamy. Event though it says it's 4 in 1 coffee I expected the label to say Mocha. The smooth flavor is what will surprise you and it's healthy coffee.
Wednesday: Ganoderma-2 in 1 Black
This is for real coffee drinkers, while the flavor was much noticeable from the first two days, this was not really my cup of coffee, it was smooth, but now a bit stronger than the first two, I could drink this but with a little cream. Surprisingly, when I added the cream it ruined it, so in order to get the full flavor and experience, do not add anything additional to your cup. I give Ganoderma high marks for the SMOOTH FLAVOR, try it you will really be surprised. It's hard to believe it's made with "mushrooms".
Thursday: Ganoderma-Chocolate
Least Favorite. It was healthy, so do not expect the flavor of Hot Chocolate from your local store. It is going to come down to your preference .This was pleasant, but not my cup of chocolate, I would opt out on this one, it was not for me, but you take the taste test and let me know.
Friday: The Green Tea
Excellent! I made a strong cup, because for me to taste Tea it has to be STRONG. I highly recommend this Green Tea, I have seasonal allergies and at the time I drank it, I was having some congestion, it cleared my sinus within the hour, I was feeling about 75% better. I highly recommend this product. Initially, I had no expectations, so it was a pleasant surprise to see the results so quickly.
Thank you Pete Taylor 3 for your continued passionate engagement of your offer and the professional manner in which you delievered my experience.

Why Switching To Healthy Coffees & Teas Makes Good Health Sense
Ganoderma or red Reishi Coffees & Teas might help to improve your health. Its biggest medical benefit is the way it strengthens your immune system. It can be considered a preventative medicine instead of a treatment for a certain disease.
Switching from your regular coffee & tea to Ganoderma coffees & teas makes sense due to its ability to improve the function of the immune system. It is said to help the body adapt to many types of body stresses such as trauma, sleep deprivation, temperature, exposure to toxins, psychological stress, infection, or radiation. It helps the organisms in the body return to a normal, balanced state after illness.
Red Reishi or Ganoderma coffee & tea, acts as regulators that fine-tunes our immune systems. Its main purpose is to detect pathogens such as bacteria and other viruses that attack the body.
Red Reishi has exceptional anti-stress qualities that can help improve memory, reduce tension and sharpen your concentration. It is particularly helpful in the treatment of degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and dementia that affects the elderly.
Ganoderma or Reishi has been around for many centuries. Originally consumed by emperors and royalty as the “miracle herb”, many westerners have overlooked it until recently.
Some of the many health benefits of Ganoderma are its antioxidant effects on the body, the positive effects on circulatory system and respiratory tract. It has been shown to lower high blood pressure, balance cholesterol levels and reduce the symptoms of bronchitis, asthma and other lung problems.
According to virtually hundreds of scientific studies and laboratory reports, Ganoderma coffees & teas are used as a treatment for cancer, insomnia, arthritis, and many other diseases.
